This semester, we will be performing Claudio Monteverdi’s (1567-1643) Vespers of the Blessed Virgin, alternated with other works by him and by contemporaries such as Gabrieli and Schütz. We will be accompanied by the baroque ensemble Ensemble a.
Monteverdi was born in Cremona and around 1590 entered the service of the Gonzaga court in Mantua. There he rose to become maestro di cappella and a famous composer in Italy. Even so, he felt underpaid and unappreciated. It was during this period that he wrote his Vespers (1610).
After the death of Duke Vincenzo, Monteverdi was dismissed. In 1613 he auditioned in Venice and was appointed maestro di cappella of St Mark’s Basilica. There he finally found security, and he stayed for thirty years, until his death. Venice was the city of double-choir writing, a style that can also be heard in Gabrieli and Schütz.
